Redfish
Redfish or Red Drum are full time residents of Florida Bay. They
may be caught on the flats while sight fishing or “blind”
casting in channels, points and along shorelines. Redfish grow
to weights approaching one hundred pounds, but in South Florida,
a redfish above thirty pounds is rare probably due in some part
to the warm tropical waters in South Florida. Redfish may be found
in large concentrated schools numbering in the hundreds or as
solitary hunters over the shallow flats. The baits of choice are
a shrimp tipped buctail, gold spoon, spinner baits and even topwater
plugs. Streamer flies and crab or shrimp patterns work well when
fly fishing. Redfish are very opportunistic feeders…They
gulp first and ask questions later. The fight is usually a short
but determined run with lots of direction changes. The Florida
bag limit is one per angler per day. The Redfish is a very tasty
meal when blackened or sautéed.
